It was mostly Dutch and German, besides Indonesian, surveys that pictured the solid and sometimes exceptional development of global Christianity in this country, fourth in the world as to population (with 245 million in 2008, ranking after China, India, and the USA). Its Christian community, about 9% of the population, has received no overall description in English. Although the country is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world, Indonesian Muslims usually remain marginal in general handbooks about Islam.
